Over 11 million people in the U.S. take birth control pills. For many, they’re a privilege, a symbol of freedom, and a dependable source of contraception. While the pill has a strong public presence in political and social activism, the biomedical experience of taking the pill seems to be lost in the conversation.
On their website, Planned Parenthood tells us, “birth control pills are safe and super simple, you take one pill daily and that’s it! You’re protected from pregnancy.” This reductive description unsettled me. My inability to answer the question, "how does the pill work" led me to wonder how my peers would respond. Within three days I received 95 responses to an online survey about birth control pills. The survey results became the content of the book. My project works to deliver missing information in a digestible manner while also encouraging greater inquiry into the complex and beautiful mechanisms of the female reproductive system. |
Part two is a closer look into the components of the female reproductive system through the imagery used in the first part of the book. The aim of the project is to bring attention to oversimplified language surrounding the pill while encouraging greater self-agency over our health through conversation about taboo subjects of the female body.
