Intro to WGSS Professor Interviews Prequel
BY CELESTE WOLOSHYN
“The question I would like to pose is not, Why are we repressed? but rather, Why do we say, with so much passion and so much resentment... that we are repressed? By what spiral did we come to affirm that sex is negated? What led us to show, ostentatiously, that sex is something we hide, to say it is something we silence?”
― Michel Foucault, The History of Sexuality, Volume 1: An Introduction Classic that I start an article about sex with a Foucault quote, but this totally relates so I just don’t feel bad about it. He is asking good questions here, and I had some more in response. I decided to pose these to 5 Introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies professors to see how they would respond. I spoke to Professor Collings, Professor Cislo, Professor Wanzo, Professor Ake, Professor Baumgartner. Here are the questions we discussed:
Taking WGSS was so important for me. As someone who originally took a lot of STEM classes and was slightly interested in business, I knew that I had to incorporate WGSS into my life. You step into the classroom with all these socialized notions in your head that go without question, and then you step out a semester later with a completely different worldview. You gain so much more awareness of how you, and those around you, perpetrate the stereotypes of gender, sexuality, etc. that keep everyone in a box. I had some enlightening and exciting conversation with these professors. You can check out their responses and my findings in the next print edition of XMag (hence prequel). Talk soon. |
